Most digital cameras on the market today take high resolution photos. High resolution photos are great for printing but lousy for sending over email due to the large size of both the photo itself and the associated file size. Resize the photo and use compression before emailing photos to friends and family. Use any of the free or paid photo editing programs available to resize photos for sharing over email.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Digital photo file
  • Photo editing software
  1. Step 1

    Launch photo editing software.

  2. Step 2

Open photo file. Use the "File" menu and click "Open." Search for the photo you want to edit and click "Open" or "OK."

  3. Step 3

Resize photo in photo editing software. Go to the "Image" menu in Photoshop and the click "Image Size." Go to the "Image" menu in GIMP and click "Scale Image." Click "Edit Photos" in the right sidebar in Microsoft Picture Manager and then "Resize."

Choose the size to alter the photo once the resize dialog box opens. Select 600X400, 800X600 or 1024X768 for email. Click "OK" to apply changes.

  4. Step 4

Choose "Save As" rrom the "File" menu. Rename the file to set it apart from the original. Select a new format, if desired, from the pulldown list. Choose JPEG--one option that also allows for compression. Select photo quality--from "Low" to "Medium"--when saving a file as a JPEG; the lower the quality, the smaller the file will be.
