Easy Guide in Installing Wireless Routers

Wireless routers have become the most preferred internet connectivity medium in this day and age. With the use of so many devices such as cell phones, PDAs, and laptops, one expects easy wireless connectivity. This can be achieved easily with the use of a wireless router.

Your router is connected to the modem that connects you to the internet. In order to make sure that your home network is secured from hackers and from nosy neighbours, follow these steps in the proper installation of your wireless router:

Step 1: Plan the location of your router. If you cannot pull your modem cable to another room where you are planning to place your router, you should just transfer this device close to the internet modem.

Step 2: Connect the modem of your internet at the back WAN port of your router. This is usually the port separated from the other ports. It also has a different color. The other ports are Ethernet ports. You can use them to connect your desktop computers so those computers can also access your local internet connection. These Ethernet ports are for the use of your non-wireless computing devices.

Step 3: Once you have connected the modem, it is time to install and configure the settings of your router. Connect your main computer to the router. Install the disc included in the package. Follow the procedures mentioned there.

Step 4: By now you should be receiving signals from your router already. Your next task is to make your network secured. Open a web browser. Click the url text box and type 192.168.1.1. If this does not direct you to the configuration page, change the url to 192.168.2.1.

Step 5: It will ask for a username and password. Refer to your manual for the username and the password. It depends on the model and the brand of the router you are using. However, the usual default username is blank and the default password is "admin".

Step 6: Change the password for your admin immediately. This will prevent hackers from entering your system. Hackers usually know the default password settings. Also change your SSID or your Network name. Hackers can easily decode your username and password if they know what model of router you are using. The default SSID of networking devices is usually their model and brand name.

Step 7: You might also want to enable the WEP, WPA2 or the WPA of your networking device. This will "hide" your network so your neighbours will not be able to pick up your internet signal.

Just remember the settings and password of your router as you might need the information again in the future.
